1997 Citroen AX changed alternator now no power

Took our trusty AX to the garage as battery warning light was on. Alternator was changed. Car was driven 1/2 mile down the road and all the dash lights came on, and then lost all power.
Garage cannot find the problem. Alternator was checked and ok. New ECU was tried but no joy.
Any ideas?
