2006 BMW 3 Series fuel gauge.

When I fill the tank and the engine is off the gauge goes straight to the top "full". However when I start up the gauge drops back down to 1/4 tank?

Sounds like faulty fuel level sensor / tank unit , but a diagnostic scan should show fault .
