1998 BMW 3 Series central locking remote not working

when i press the button on the remote to lock the car it does not register but whenn i use the key to lock or unlock it sets off the alarm when i get in and close the door.

the only thing it could be is the battery in the key wants replacing

I'm not sure if your year of car is the same but most cars nowadays have a rechargeable battery in the key remote that charges when you drive. Sounds like the key needs reprogrammed, it's a simple task ie: switching ignition on and off so many times then pressing remote so many times. Phone the local dealer and they will tell you the sequence. Ask them if it's a rechargeable battery in remote or a normal battery. Ian
