Hi,

I have a BMW 3 Series (e46) automatic. I have had recent problems with the gear box, after getting it changed 3 times, the problem of the car is that it revs highly and the amount of power available is limited. The problem started off with this sign next to the D on the dash board, AA inspection showed that it was gears 3 & 4, i first got a secound hand gear box and still had the same problem, the garage said it must be a faulty gear box, i then bought a recon gear box twice and am still have the same problem. The garage are finding it difficult to spot the problem, surly it cant be that all 3 gear box's are faulty. Some else suggested that it might be an electrical fault some were. However there is no sign next to the D in the dash board but once the car heats up after driveing for about 20min the car revs highly and the amount of power available is limited.
Any ideas what might be the problem???

Thanks

You would be best to get a scan done on car and see what shows or else take car into an automatic transmission specialist who is familar with any faults on that box . I.e there was problems with the drains for the vent plenum chamber in the bulkhead getting blocked .This allowed water to overflow into the car, on autos , pouring over the transmission ECU and destroying it.
