If your using oil , losing water and got excessive smoke at exhaust , sounds like engine knacked . You could get a compression test on engine to give you an idea of condition .Then get a pressure test and sniff test (block test )if needed . That should let you know how good or bad the engine is .

1. It sounds like your cyl head is cracked and therefore the white smoke is steam.

2.Using oil, this is due to your cylinders are worn and oil is getting passed your piston rings.

3. It will be hard to start but get someone to follow you and observe your exhaust emission, if it is light blue smoke its oil, if it is white smoke it is steam. Blue smoke will emit when you change gear and put your foot down.

It can be repaired but expensive, or an reconditioned engine. If it is only steam, lets hope that your cyl head is only cracked, if its the block then get rid. Oil, well you can have cyl liners inserted to give you better compression and prevent the oil from escaping. In all Paul its a lot of money my old mate. Keep checking the oil and water levels or it will just sieze up.
