2004 BMW 3 Series engine just stops - no noise

Car: BMW 3 Series
Year: 2004
Variant: 320d
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi,
Was driving down the M4 when the engine completely lost power. There was no noise, no reving or clunking. The lights all stayed on so assume there's no problem with the battery.
Sat on hard shoulder, and after 10 minutes I tried to restart it by gently putting my foot on the accelarator - it started again, and I managed to do another 40 miles until the same thing happened.
Any suggestions as to what it could be and how much it would be to fix?

Sounds like a fuel feed issue. Either the breather for your fuel tank is blocked so that a vacuum forms and won't let the pump suck the fuel, or you could have a leak in your fuel line which allows air in and starves the engine.
Both of these are likely at motorway speeds but let you motor around town because of the slower use of petrol.
Alternatively, the problem could be the pump itself not being 100%, but I'd check the others first.
