because you have replaced the old air filter with a k and n filter you have increased the air flow so all that may be required is the tick over turning up abit to sort this out or even a rolling road tune

Jamie, in fitting the K&N filter have you disconnected or removed the mass air flow meter?

the 316i compact has 2 lambda sensors on the exhaust system, get them checked first, next check your thermostat, I know that sounds stupid but the compacts thermostat has a sensor fitted on it, normal problem here is the 2 little plastic lugs break of allowing the working part of the stat to fall out of place so it doesn't send proper signal to the ECU.
