1997 BMW 3 Series will not engage straight into reverse gear from drive and car jumps from 5th to 4th gear periodically

hie my 328 will not engage into reverse gear from drive. you need to first of all put it in park then move back to reverse but even that at time takes two attempts. also the other week whilst cruising at abt 70miles onthe motorway it suddenly jumped from 5th to 4th gear but doesnt seem to do so when travellin at 80miles. could this be a major gearbox fault?

sounds like wither selector solenoids or gearbox ECU fault. have it plugged in and checked!!
