2009 BMW 3 Series right hand indicator flashing twice speed with warning light

Variant: 2.0 M Sport touring
When indicating right, occasionally the the rear ceases working whilst the front & wing indicators flash at double speed. This is accompanied with a dashboard warning light advising bulb failure. As it is an intermittent fault it clearly isn’t a bulb failure.
Advised to replace whole light cluster which appears extreme.

You could remove the lamp assembly and check the circuit board and bulb contacts also any earths .
