Most systems have a pressure release valve built into the cap to permit just that.
So you'll need the cap pressure release tested and a coolant pressure test done for system pressure.

Check and top up coolant level when cold .Check coolant fan cutting in .If not that , test thermostat .If still having problems carry out a pressure test which should show any external leaks and if needed , a block test which will test Cyl head / gasket .
