Loss of power, rev counter and battery

2002 BMW 3 Series 318i
Car: BMW 3 Series
Year: 2002
Variant: 318i
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi all, any help and advice is most welcome. First of all on several occassions iv lost power with a horrible crunching/chugging noise coming from my engine. It feels as though the whole engine block is shaking. I cant engage any revs and need to turn the ignition off then back on and the problem goes.

Secondly - on a number of occasions my rev counter may jump from 1000 - 1500 whilst both static and mobile. This often seems to clear itself after a few days.

Last but not least - sometimes the car won't start, however all power lights, sterio and headlights come on, but it just ticks over and doesn't fire up.
My car's in a BMW dealers at the moment and they cannot diagnose any of the problems as their not showing as fualts on the computor system.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks

going on what u say, i suspect crankshaft sensor and or sensor plate fault. if the BMW computer does not pick up a fault then the fault has to be either component or mechanical failure. i have experienced trigger problems with the cam and crank sensors. get them to check the sensor plates. having said that, the sensors themselves can be faulty even though the diagnostic computer says they are ok... thats where i would start... hope this helps!!
