2003 BMW 3 Series revs constantly peak and troff

Car: BMW 3 Series
Year: 2003
Variant: 318 ci
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Ok, been having this problem on and off for a few days.

When starting my car the revs, which should usually sit just under 1000 constantly peak and troff, building upto around 2,500 then back down to 1000 where it almost stalls its self, then builds its self back up again.

It does this when ever I come to a stop, traffic lights etc. Even after half an hour of driving the problem continues. Also when driving i notice brief moments of power loss. Any ideas?

The car is a BMW 318 ci convertable, 03 plate, petrol, maunal, 54,000 miles. Cheers, Paul

check pipes to and from air filter box clean if nec. you then will find an air valve clean with carb cleaner, check oil quality and history, check all vacuum pipes for splits giving an audiable hiss.

as well as solution one have the lambda sensor checked as this could cause your mixture to be stuck on rich causing the car to surge.
The sensor should be constantly switching netween voltages i.e voltage rising and falling on regular intervals.
