Water leak? rad light but no overheating

hi
my work mates car seems to be losing water from the cooling system somewhere. the radiator light comes on but is not overheating. today he put a quater bottle water in to it to the full mark before we set off home then 5 miles down the road the light came on the water had gone. he keeps the level topped up so there has gotta be a leak somewhere. he has taken the drip tray off to see underneth but cannot see any leak. is there any hoses to look for or any hidden areas that could be the cause for the problem. there is no leak in to the footwells.
cheers

If you can't see water leak then it's probably the headgasket has gone.

he should be looking for sighns of water in the oil this will be a milky coulor if present and and oil in the water. also look for sighns of water in the footwell area it may take getting the system pressure tested to find the leek he could put in a bottle of k-seal as a temp fix
