Exhaust emitions too high

Failed its MOT yesterday on emitions after 2nd fast idle test=< 0.48% CO excessive
Told to renew the catalit converter??
Is this true or is there a cheaper altenative??? (as friend said just give it a good frashing to blow out the cobwebs)

Assume the engine get a regular service if so, yes a good thrash could do it but more often than not needs a gas test right after. if the lambda reading was near the limit i would try that first it is a cheaper option and may be contributing to the poor reading

if that does not work get a can of bg44k fuel treatment
