2005 BMW 1 Series steptronic semi auto mode not working

Although the Auto mode works fine in P, R, N and D, when the leaver is put into "Manual" mode and pressed to change gear manually nothing happens, it just continues to work as if still in D.
The gear Indicator on the dash remains in 'D' when the leaver is in both the 'D' position and the 'M' positions
any ideas? cheers

Is this something that has started or have you just got the car ?Have you read the manual / handbook how this gearbox works ? If you think g/box not operating correctly , need to get it scanned and see what shows .

i suspect CAN BUS fault. probably the gear selector switch not making contact or possibly a software issue. they are known for it.. best place is specialist in BMW or agents.
