Track Rod Ends

What are Track Rod Ends?
Track rod ends connect to the steering knuckle (the part that the brakes etc are connected to). They are joined by a ball joint to allow multi directional movement to allow easy steering adjustments. They essentially join the steering rack to the part that turns the front wheels. They're vitally important and maintenance of them is key to a safe steering system. Tell-tale signs of failing track rod ends can be knocking noises from your suspension. These problems need to be rectified as failed track rod ends could lead to steering failure.

Steering wheel vibrating as car driving

When driving along there is a noticeable vibration or shaking in the steering wheel, it can often go away or change depending on the speed.

As the car moves around there seems to be a clunking sound coming from a wheel, it generally happens when turning at slower speeds, the sensation can sometimes be felt through the steering wheel.

Tyres showing excessive wear

The tyres are wearing down quicker than usual, there is a noticeable change in the amount of remaining tread on the tyre over a shorter period/distance than you'd expect.

Steering gets stuck when turning the steering wheel

When turning the steering wheel feels as though it's sticking or hitting a point where it can't turn anymore, sometimes there is a noise when this happens.

Suspension makes creaking or squeaking sound

At slow speeds there is a distinct creaking or squeaking sound coming from the corner of the car. The sound is more obvious at slow speeds and will usually be noticeable when you feel weight shift around the car when it changes direction.
