Changed to one of the first X1s 23d SE after having an X3 3.0 SE for 6 yrs. Now done 22K mls with no problems. Changed two tyres at 21K the remaining two will be due in a couple of K. Suspension so much better than the X3 which was equipped with sports suspension. More pliant but does not roll at all. The performance ranks well with the 3.0i X3, but will do nearly twice as many miles to a gallon. Currentaverage fuel consumption over the 21K mls is 38.2 mpg, not as good as quoted figures but they never are. We can get 45+ mpg on a long holiday run. Has done some hard work during a property renovation and has earned the nickname the"first BMW Van" Seating is very comfortable and the lumbar supports indispensable as old age creeps on. Auto gearbox is almost seamless and the paddles really are only there for fun. Not as good as the X3 in snow but this is probably more down to the runflat tyres which are more road orientated. We find the car just the right size for two and odd occasion for four but leg room is just acceptable in the rear. The seating height and position is just right for comfortable driving and entering/exiting the car.
My one complaint is the engine noise particulary on pulling away seems worse than some other diesels I have driven. Then at 2500 rpm the exhaust has a particular growl which can be annoying although some would argue "sporty"
All round good workhorse and comfortable car, if a little expensive, but then quality counts and costs.
