2001 Volkswagen Golf Problems

There is a hesitation between 2500 and 3000 rpm when accelerating through the gears, it is more noticeable in 2nd and 3rd gear its there in 4th but not so pronounced and I can't tell its there in 1st or 5th. Any ideas?
