2004 Vauxhall Zafira Problems

when accelerating in all gears the car revs to approx 2500-3000 rpm then goes flat and will not accelerate any further no matter how far you press the accelerator

When my wife tries to start the engine it does not turn over takes 3 or 4 times then starts, a bit worrying if going away from home. it is a petrol motor |Can anyone help solve the problem. Big thanks in hope of an answer
