Hi. I thought I'd done the right thing to lend my daughter my civic as she is covering 60 miles a day & the car had no previous history. She phoned to say the handbrake warning light, SRS warning light came on at the same time as a momentary loss of power to the radio. Any ideas?

My Honda SRS light has come on, what do I do?
I have a 2001 Honda Civic four door LX vehicle. Ever since I had my car, which was bought new, my side airbag light would come on when people leaned too hard on my passenger door, and when I questioned them on it a long time ago, they said it was something all 2001 Honda's did and not to worry about it. However, the other day my SRS light came on. I look it up in the manual and noticed it had something to do with my airbag sensors. I don't want to take it to the dealership so they can charge me an arm and a leg to fix something like a fuse, so is there any other option? If my SRS light is on, is there a possibility that my airbags will randomly deploy for no reason. I know it may sound dumb, but knowing my luck that would happen to me. If I have to break down and go to the shop, do you know about how much it would cost me? Is there a way to turn it off, so I will not have to keep looking at it everytime I drive? Thanks for any information a head of time!

Additional Details
PS: I look up recalls my model and they did not say anything about side airbag sensors or SRS lights. Plus, I have never been in an accident to where I have had my airbags deploy...

while there is no recall on this item, there is an extended warranty from Honda for 10 years/150,000 on the OPDS sensor which is the part that usually fails and causes the light to come on. Heres what Honda has to say about the extended warranty:

BACKGROUND
Several vehicle models may have a problem with the
OPDS (occupant position detection system) that
causes the SRS indicator to stay on. Typically, one or
more of these DTCs will be set:
• SRS DTC 15-1 (faulty OPDS unit or OPDS not
initialized)
• SRS DTC 15-2 (faulty side airbag indicator circuit)
• SRS DTC 15-3 (faulty OPDS sensor)
To ensure continued reliability with the OPDS,
American Honda is extending the warranty on the
OPDS unit and the OPDS sensor to 10 years or
150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

you will need to take the car to the dealer to have it checked to see if this is the problem that is causing the light to come on. there should not be a charge to check it if it is the condition that is covered by the extended warranty. It takes about 3 minutes to determine if the light is on for the OPDS or if it is some other cause. If it is caused by something else then the dealer will want to charge you for further diagnosis. At that point you can say 'no' if you don't want to go any further.
my guess is it will be covered under the extended warranty

also: it is not a fuse and the airbags will not go off when the light SRS light is on; whenever the SRS light is on the airbag system is disabled. Unless you have the special tool, you can't just turn the light off; even if you did, it would come back on the next time you drove the car.

hope that answers your question

Asker's Rating: Asker's Comment: You rock! I took my car in today and they ran the scan and found that my problem was covered under the extended warranty. **High five!** I take it in tomorrow for them to fix the problem--for free!

And also this ,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

there are two strong possibilities, both of which should be covered under your warranties. the first is called an Occupant Presence Detection Sensor that is used to determine the size and weight of passengers seated in the front seat. Honda has a problem with them going bad and turning the SRS light on. Honda extended the warranty on those sensors so if it is that problem, the repair will be done at no charge.the second possibility is the seat belt buckle. there is a switch inside the buckle that tells the SRS computer that you have your seat belt on. If the switch goes bad the system doesn't know if you have the seat belt on or not. seat belts have a lifetime warranty from honda so if it is that problem then it will be repaired at no charge.when the SRS light is on the system is disabled and the air bags will not work, so its imperative that you take the car to a Honda dealer to get it checked and repaired as soon as possible.hope that helps

Hope this helps you .

I have a Honda Stream, basically a civic but larger. The SRS light came on last year for some reason and I quickly reset it with a simple paper clip. If you go on Youtube and type in civic SRS light it shows you exactly what to do, so simple took me about five minutes. Make sure first there are no serious problems with the airbags otherwise its just a simple re-set.
