Please help! The car is locked and all the lights are off then randomly and for no reason the dashboard dials, clock and mileage indicator light up. Sometimes they stay on for a few hours then turn themselves off, sometimes we turn them off by unlocking the car and then locking it again. This is constantly draining the battery as it can happen 4 or more times a day. Garage has no idea and has cost us a lot of money.

You need to get a "Global Scan" done.
This scans ALL the computer equipped modules in the system.
And the dash is a computer equipped module.
You may have to go to ford for this.
Quite possible for a faulty dash module to cause your symptoms,
the global scan will tell.

Is a global scan the same as a diagnostics scan? The Ford garage have done a diagnostics scan and didn't identify any problem.

Technically no,
A standard scan usually just checks for any fault codes,
And if they're "lazy" that's all they check.
A global scan is a specific test procedure where the scan tool checks EVERY module fitted with a chip and there's a few in that car.
They're interconnected via what is called the "CAN BUS" wiring.
And on some Fords the chipped components could be the engine ECU,
The ABS,doors,....................on and on.
Including the dash ECU.
I've had Fords in with canbus faults that actually stop the starter motor from working!
So from your description I'd say you have a faulty dash/speedo module,
Which would most likely show up in a global scan.
Or try contacting a specialist like "BBA REMAN".
Google them and follow their website to Ford dash faults.
You'll see your not alone.

Make sure the interior lights also are not on when fault occurs which would signify a sticking micro switch in door lock assembly .Could check with Ford if that year / model has a Central Timer Module (CTM) as on other models which controls the delay and often causes this problem .
