Driving the car with the oil level below min will wear the engine so get it topped up asap.

Regarding burning oil I reckon a modern car should burn less than a litre of oil in 5000 miles. (mine has 120k on the clock, is 22 years old and uses less than a litre in 10,000 miles) As the engine wears it will burn more. When it gets bad the exhaust smoke will look blue aspecially on over run from high revs.

If you are burning oil it should show up high hydrocarbons on the emissions test they do for the MOT. A friendly garage will probaby test your exhaust emissions for the price of a beer.

Check it's not a leaking oil too.

Regarding what oil to use you could give Unipart a ring and if you tell them the reg of your car they will tell you the appropriate type of oil. ie the w rating and whether to use semi synthectic or fully synthetic.

Ignore the advice above from " delboy11" as it is wrong and it's very important that you use correct oil ,always check first .For example from Castrol site .

Well you should know and will have to disagree with the other poster ( " mechanic over 30 years " )on what should be used on that car .Plus again , you refer to all cars in your post .

As a FINAL post on this saga , you stated in your post " petrol cars on annual sevricing use 10w40 semi synthetic " which is wrong .I then used the Fords as an example of the correct oil they use .This was to let people see that it's important to check that they get the correct grade / type of oil as the wrong oil can cause engine problems and also invalidate car warranty .
